Dr Ffion Carlin, MD
MBChB, MRCP, MSc, DTMH, DMCC
Internal & palliative medicine; Supporting people living with chronic health conditions; integrative medicine practitioner; therapeutic health and lifestyle coach.
In my hospital work I treat people with acute and chronic health problems.
In my hospice work I look after people with life-limiting and terminal conditions including people who are approaching the end of their lives, and their loved ones. The focus of this work is on reducing the physical symptoms, pain, psychological and emotional stress caused by serious and chronic illness, enabling people to continue doing things that bring them joy. Palliative care is about living the best you can with the time you have.
Since starting my medical training nearly 20 years ago I have worked across many specialties in a variety of different countries, hospitals and health settings. I’ve worked in general and acute medicine, intensive care, sexual health and infectious diseases in the NHS, the humanitarian sector, and in clinical research. In the last few years I have sought out training in a range of therapeutic techniques including transformational life coaching, acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT), trauma-informed and somatic techniques.
I’m also a dog mum, an adventurer and a gardener. Being outside up a mountain is my favourite place to be. I love to hear people tell their stories.
Im not here to tell you to live your life like i’m living mine. We are all different and need nurturing with different things. Trying to force ourselves into the same size box as others ultimately hurts us and can hold us back from living the life we want.
I started Embodied Medicine to allow me the time and space to share my knowledge and work with people beyond the standard medical framework. I recognise how many people are traumatised by their experiences of healthcare and illness, both patients, their families and healthcare staff. Through Embodied Medicine coaching I am able to support and empower people experiencing the health system (as patients or professionals) on their journey of self-exploration and self-empowerment towards better health.
My approach is personalised, focusing on what the individual in front of me wants and needs for themselves, and not what I think they need.
Like so many people, my own personal journey has played a big part in leading me along the path I am currently on. I went into medicine because I wanted to support people, but increasingly I found myself wanting to approach things differently. I wanted to move away from the standard western medical model of short appointments, prescribing lots of medications, having less and less time to spend with each person and never getting to the root of what is going on. Doctors are trained to focus on physical symptoms so we can prescribe a treatment for it and send you on your way- we very rarely ask what else has been going on in someone’s life despite strong evidence that life stressors contribute significantly to physical health.
I’d like to change that. I’d like to hear your story and get to the root of the problem.
